Count stops, not miles

Brake wear is usually discussed in miles, and for a commuter that is close enough. For a vehicle that works a route around the valley, miles are almost meaningless.

Every stop turns the vehicle's motion into heat in the pads and rotors, and that is what wears them. A van making sixty deliveries a day across town can put more work into its brakes in a week than a highway commuter does in a month, while covering a fraction of the distance.

Weight adds to it. A van loaded to the roof in the morning stops heavier than the same van empty in the afternoon, and a pickup carrying tools and materials every day is braking for all of them.

What that means in practice

For a household car, the usual mileage guidance works. For a route vehicle, a contractor's truck or anything that stops constantly with a load, inspect on a time basis instead: a brake check at a fixed interval, set by how hard the vehicle works rather than by its odometer.

The first inspection sets the pattern. Measure how much pad was used since the last change, divide by the months, and the next check date follows from that.

Signs worth booking for now

  • A squeal that comes and goes with the brakes, or a grinding sound.
  • A pedal that feels softer or travels further than it used to.
  • A pull to one side when braking.
  • A pulsing pedal or a shaking steering wheel when slowing from speed.

The national brake repair page covers what each of those usually means. A pull that stays after the brakes are fixed is worth an alignment check, and a vehicle due for scheduled maintenance can have both done in one visit.

Questions

Brake questions, Salt Lake City

My van does low miles. Can the brakes still be worn?

Yes. Brakes wear with stops and load, not distance. A van on a busy delivery route can wear them quickly at low mileage.

How often should a route vehicle have its brakes checked?

On a fixed time interval set by how hard it works. The first inspection shows how fast the pads are going.

Does carrying a load make a difference?

Yes. A loaded vehicle puts more work into the brakes at every stop.

There is a grinding sound. Is it safe to keep driving?

Book it promptly. Grinding often means the pad is worn through and metal is reaching the rotor.
