The season sets the schedule
A truck that stops costs a load. A combine that stops can cost a window that does not come back, and the weather decides when that window opens. Planning around that is most of what separates a farm's tire decisions from a fleet's.
What follows from it is simple enough to say and harder to do: the work that can be done early should be. Tires inspected between seasons, a machine re-shod in the workshop rather than at the end of a row, casings sent for retreading when nothing is waiting on them. The stores stock for the season around them, and the time to ask about a size is before you need it rather than the morning you do.
Tires for farm equipment
Purcell carries agricultural tires for tractors, combines, sprayers, implements, grain carts and irrigation equipment, and tracks for tracked machines. Alongside those, farms draw on categories that are not strictly agricultural:
- OTR tires for loaders and heavy equipment working the yard, carried at 55 locations.
- Light truck tires and trailer tires for the pickups and trailers that do the running around, carried at 55 and 56 locations.
- UTV and ATV tires for the machines that cover the ground between all of it, carried at 57 locations, the most widely stocked category Purcell holds.
Purcell works with 14 tire brands across the business, listed on the brands page. Sizes on farm equipment vary enormously, so call the store with the size off the sidewall and the machine it is going on.
Services a farm actually uses
Farms use the same service list as everyone else, weighted differently:
- Tire and wheel balancing, at 51 locations, for the road-going equipment.
- Retreading, at 54 locations through seven plants, for casings worth keeping.
- OTR services, at 41 locations, for off-highway equipment.
- Wheel refurbishing, at 42 locations, which on large agricultural wheels is usually cheaper than replacing them.
- 24-hour roadside assistance, at 48 locations, for equipment and trucks that stop on the road.
- Fleet services, at 49 locations, which works for a farm with a yard full of machines exactly as it does for a trucking company.
Mobile service, work performed at your site rather than at the store, is offered at seven locations: Phoenix, AZ, Springdale, AR, Denver, CO, Springfield, MO, North Las Vegas, NV, Reno, NV and Ogden, UT. If you need work done where the machine stands, ask the store nearest you what it can cover.
Retreading farm casings
Six of Purcell's seven retread plants list agricultural casings among the tires they retread or repair. For a farm, the arithmetic is the same as for a fleet and often sharper: large agricultural tires are expensive, they accumulate hours rather than miles, and a casing that is sound can carry new tread rather than being scrapped.
Casings are collected at the store you deal with and retreaded at the plant. See retreading for how the program works.
