Moving a big tire is a job in itself
On a car, the tire change is the job. On a loader or a haul truck, getting the tire to the machine and off it again is a large part of the job, and it is where a lot of the risk sits.
A large OTR tire can weigh as much as a small vehicle. It does not stand up reliably on its own, and once it starts to roll or fall there is no stopping it by hand. Moving one needs the right equipment, a clear path and people who know which way it will go if it gets away.
Which means a few things are worth settling before a change-out rather than discovering on the day.
Access. Where is the machine, and can a service truck and handling equipment reach it? A machine parked in a tight corner of a site, on a slope or in soft ground makes the job slower and less safe.
Ground. The change needs firm, level ground for the machine and for the tire. Moving the machine to a better spot first is often quicker than working around a poor one.
Storage of the new tire. Delivered tires should be stored secured, not leaned against a wall where they can tip.
Disposal. Old tires and casings have to go somewhere. Decide whether they are being kept for retreading, returned, or scrapped.
Repairs before replacement
A cut or a puncture in an OTR tire is often repairable, and on a tire this expensive that assessment is always worth having. The rims under the tires are part of the same work: wheel refurbishing is offered here.
The national OTR services page covers fitting, repair and supply in more detail. For a managed mining program, Phoenix and Tucson run mining fleet services.
