Replacing one tire on a driven axle

When a single tire on a loader or a four-wheel-drive machine is damaged beyond repair, the natural move is to replace that one tire. On a driven axle, that can create a new problem.

A new tire is taller than a worn one. On a machine where the wheels are driven together, a tall tire and a short tire on the same axle, or front and rear tires of different rolling diameter, are trying to cover different distances with every turn. The drivetrain absorbs the difference. Over time that can mean extra wear on differentials and axles, scrubbing of the tires, and on some machines heat in components that were not designed to carry that load.

What to do about it

Measure before deciding. Compare the tread depth or rolling circumference of the new tire with the one beside it. A small difference may be within what the machine maker allows. A large one is not.

Replace in pairs where the difference is large. Two new tires on one axle, with the better of the old tires kept as a spare, is often the sensible answer.

Use a part-worn match. A sound used tire of similar wear is sometimes a closer match than a new one.

Check the machine maker's guidance. It usually states how much difference in rolling diameter is acceptable.

The store can measure what is on the machine and say which approach fits. On an expensive tire, that conversation is worth having before the order.

Other OTR work

Damaged tires are assessed for repair before replacement. Rims can go to wheel refurbishing, and sound casings can go into Purcell's retreading program. The national OTR services page covers fitting, repair and supply. For a managed mining program, Tucson runs mining fleet services.

Questions

OTR questions, Willcox

Can we replace just one tire on a loader?

Sometimes. On a driven axle, a large difference in diameter between the new tire and its partner strains the drivetrain. Measure first.

How much difference is acceptable?

The machine maker usually states it. The store can measure what is on the machine and compare.

What if the difference is too large?

Replace in pairs, keep the better old tire as a spare, or fit a part-worn tire of similar wear.

Can a damaged OTR tire be repaired instead?

Often. The assessment decides, and it is worth having before any replacement.
