A squeal when the A/C switches on
Plenty of air conditioning problems announce themselves with a sound before the air ever gets warm, and the most common one is a short squeal or chirp the moment the A/C is selected.
The compressor is driven by a belt from the engine. When you switch the A/C on, a clutch engages and the compressor starts to turn, which suddenly adds load to that belt. A belt that is glazed, worn or loose slips for a moment under the extra load, and the slip is the squeal.
On its own that is a small job. Left alone, it is not. The same belt usually drives other things the engine depends on, and a belt that slips gets hotter and wears faster. A compressor that is working harder than it should also loads the belt more than a healthy one would, so the noise can be either half of the pair telling you something.
Other sounds worth mentioning
- A steady grinding or rumble whenever the A/C runs, gone when it is off.
- A click every few seconds from the engine bay with the A/C on, as the clutch engages and drops out.
- A hiss from behind the dash for a short while after the engine is switched off. Often normal; worth mentioning if it is new.
What to say when you book
When the noise happens, how long it lasts, and whether it stops when the A/C is turned off. Those three answers point the check straight at the belt, the clutch or the compressor.
Belt and engine-driven parts overlap with cooling system work and scheduled maintenance, both here. The national A/C service page covers what a recharge does and does not fix.
