A vehicle that sat out the off-season

Around a lake area, plenty of vehicles spend months parked. The truck kept at a second home, the tow vehicle that only comes out when the boat does, the car left in a garage while its owners are elsewhere. When the season starts, they are expected to start and pull a load on the first weekend.

A cooling system does not age only by miles. Sitting has its own effects, and they tend to show up in the first hot drive.

Seals and gaskets dry. Rubber that is not wetted and warmed regularly can shrink or harden a little. A joint that was tight when the vehicle was parked can seep once it is pressurized again.

Hoses age in place. A hose can crack or soften with no miles on it at all. Squeeze the main radiator hoses with the engine cold: a hose that feels crunchy, rock hard, or soft and swollen is worth replacing before it is asked to work.

Animals move in. A parked vehicle is shelter. Rodents chew hoses and wiring, and nesting material ends up packed in front of the radiator, where it blocks the airflow that cooling depends on. Look at the front of the radiator and under the hood for debris or chewed rubber.

Leaks show up as stains. Check the ground under the front of the vehicle after it has been parked overnight following its first run. A fresh spot is easier to trace now than on a trailer ramp.

Before the first tow

Do the checks above, start it and let it reach full temperature in the driveway, watch the gauge, and look again for drips. A vehicle that passes that and then pulls a boat up a grade has had a fair test. One that does not is cheaper to fix in the lot than on the shoulder.

Belt and engine-driven parts overlap with A/C service, and a fault that turns out to be the engine itself is engine repair, both here. The national cooling system page covers what to do if the gauge goes into the red.

Questions

Cooling system questions, Osage Beach

My truck sat all winter. What should I check before towing?

Hoses for cracks or softness, the front of the radiator for debris, chewed rubber under the hood, and drips after the first warm run.

Can a cooling system leak from sitting?

It can. Seals and gaskets that stay dry and cold for months may seep once the system is pressurized again.

I found nesting material near the radiator.

Clear it and look for chewed hoses or wiring. Blocked airflow alone can make an engine run hot.

Should I have it checked before the season?

If anything looked off, yes. It is easier to fix in the lot than on a trailer ramp.
