The interval on the sticker is for an average vehicle
Service intervals are written for typical use. Plenty of vehicles in this part of Montana are not typical, and the manufacturer has a name for it: severe service.
What counts as severe is unremarkable to anyone who lives here. Frequent short trips in cold weather. Extended idling. Dust and gravel roads. Towing or carrying weight. Sustained low temperatures.
A vehicle doing several of those should be on the shorter interval, and most owners have no idea the shorter interval exists. It is in the same manual as the one they are following.
Why short trips in cold weather are hard on oil
An engine that never reaches operating temperature does not burn off the moisture and combustion byproducts that collect in the oil. They stay there and dilute it.
A vehicle doing a few miles to work and a few miles back, in winter, is running almost entirely in that state. The oil looks fine on the dipstick and is doing less than it should, which is exactly the case the long interval was not written for.
Viscosity is a cold-start decision
The grade in the manual is a range, and in a climate with severe winters the choice within that range matters.
Oil thickens as it cools, and on a very cold start the engine runs briefly on whatever can reach the top of it. A grade appropriate for the temperature reduces that period. Ask when you book rather than defaulting to what was in it last time, particularly if the vehicle sits outside.
The visit is worth more than the oil
An oil change puts the vehicle on a lift with somebody underneath it, which is an inspection that costs nothing extra.
Tire wear patterns, brake condition, leaks, worn suspension components and a coolant test all take moments when the vehicle is already there. Billings runs sixteen services, so anything found can be dealt with at the same store rather than booked somewhere else. See scheduled maintenance, brake repair and cooling system service.
About this store
The Billings store is the Purcell location in Montana for vehicle repair, managed by Larry Wagoner, and carries all nine Purcell tire categories. Belgrade is commercial only and does not offer oil changes.
See the national oil change page for all 33 locations.
