Short-haul trucks get overlooked

Alignment is usually sold on highway miles, which means the trucks that never leave the metro get left out of the conversation entirely.

They should not be. A short-haul unit spends its day turning tightly, maneuvering in yards, backing to docks and crossing broken pavement, and all of that works the steering and suspension hard. The odometer stays modest while the duty cycle does not.

A fleet that aligns its over-the-road units and ignores its yard tractors and local units is treating distance as the only thing that wears tires. It is not.

What the tires show

Steer tires on a misaligned truck wear on an edge or feather across the face, and the fleet finds out when a set comes off early.

In a metro fleet the signal is easy to miss because tire life is short anyway and everyone has a reason ready: the work is hard, the roads are poor, the drivers turn tight. Comparing units doing the same work is what cuts through that. Two trucks on the same duty cycle with steer lives that differ by a third are telling you something specific.

Both axles, and then the trailer

A tractor alignment covers the steer and the drives, because the drive axles decide what the front axle has to correct for. Aligning one without the other produces work that comes undone.

What gets measured is toe, camber and caster at the steer, drive axle alignment, and the relationship between the axles. If a combination still tracks badly with the tractor correct, the trailer is the remaining candidate. Trailer alignment is offered here, and measuring both on one visit settles it.

What it costs to leave

Tires, fuel, and the casing. A steer scrubbed away on one shoulder will not pass at the plant, so a fleet with an alignment problem is losing the tire and its retread value together, on every affected unit.

Questions

Alignment questions, Renton

Our trucks are local. Do they need alignment?

Yes. Tight turning, yard maneuvering and broken pavement work the geometry hard regardless of distance covered.

How do we pick which unit to start with?

Compare steer tire life across units doing similar work and start with the outlier.

How long is the truck out of service?

Allow most of a morning or afternoon, longer if something has to be corrected first. Call with the unit for a window.

Can the trailer be done at the same time?

Trailer alignment is a separate service at this store. Ask about one visit when you book.
