A stopped unit in a metro costs more than the repair
The invoice for a roadside call is rarely the expensive part. The expensive part is what the unit was supposed to be doing.
A missed dock appointment pushes a delivery into the next window. A service van out of action means calls get rescheduled. In an area where traffic already decides how many stops a vehicle makes in a day, an hour lost at the wrong time removes more than an hour of work.
That is the argument for treating roadside assistance as part of a plan rather than as a number somebody looks up during a breakdown.
The things that make the response slow
Three, and all of them are preventable the day before rather than on the night.
- Nobody knows exactly where the unit is. A road name is not enough in a metro area. The direction of travel, the nearest exit or cross street, and whether it is on a shoulder, in a yard or at a dock all change the response.
- Nobody can authorize the work. Settle that once on a fleet account.
- Nobody knows the tire size. It is on the sidewall, and it is also on the account if your specifications are recorded.
What is covered
Commercial units: tractors, trailers, straight trucks and fleet equipment. Renton carries all nine Purcell tire categories, so the tire that arrives is more likely to be the right one on the first attempt.
The store is open Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Roadside assistance covers commercial units outside those hours.
The failures worth preventing
Curb strikes, which a tight yard or a narrow turn produces regularly and which can damage a tire, a wheel or both. Debris punctures, which are a constant in an area with this much construction. Under-inflation, which is the one that causes the failure but never gets blamed for it.
A unit that stops twice in a season is worth looking at rather than rescuing twice. The store sees the failed tire; ask what it showed.
About this store
The Renton store is at 316 SW 16th St, managed by Chris Contrades. Lacey and Monroe run the same service at the other ends of the metro.
