Retreading in Jonesboro, AR

Purcell Tire & Service collects casings for retreading at 3218 South Caraway in Jonesboro. The work is done at the Purcell plant in Potosi, Missouri. Call (870) 972-8473.

Low field pressures and what they do to a casing

Running agricultural tires soft in the field is correct practice. It spreads the machine's weight, reduces compaction and improves traction, and it is why those tires exist in the form they do.

It also means the casing spends its working life flexing a great deal more than a truck tire does, which is fine within the range the tire was designed for and not fine outside it.

Two things take a casing outside that range, and both are ordinary.

Running field pressures on the road. The tire flexes at speeds it was not inflated for, heat builds in the sidewall, and the structure degrades internally with nothing visible on the outside. The casing can be finished while the tread still looks almost new.

Letting pressure drift below the field setting. Soft is a specification, not a direction. A tire meant to run at a particular low pressure and actually running well under it is being damaged rather than operated.

Which is why a farm's casing pass rate usually reflects pressure discipline more than anything else, and why the number is worth asking the store for.

Where the work happens

Purcell runs seven retread plants and Potosi, Missouri serves this part of the state. This store collects casings and arranges transport both ways.

Jonesboro is one of 54 Purcell locations collecting casings.

Send them between seasons

A machine standing through the off months is a casing that can go without costing anything. The same casing identified during the work is one nobody can spare.

Walk the machines while they are idle and decide then.

About this store

The Jonesboro store carries all nine Purcell tire categories, opens at 7:00 AM, and is managed by Tony Kuehnel. Hot Springs, Mabelvale and Springdale collect for the same plant.

See the national retreading page for how the program works and for all 54 collecting locations.

Questions

Retreading questions, Jonesboro

Does running soft in the field damage the casing?

Not at the pressure the tire is specified for. It damages the casing when those pressures are carried onto the road, or when the pressure drifts below the field setting.

Why does road running matter so much?

Speed. A tire inflated for flotation and driven at road speed flexes far more than it was meant to, and the heat degrades the casing internally with nothing showing outside.

When should casings go in?

Between seasons, while the machine is standing anyway. One identified mid-season is one nobody can spare.

Can farm tires be retreaded?

Sound agricultural casings can be, and that is where the saving is largest.
