Purcell Retread Plant in Potosi, MO

The Purcell retread plant at 301 N. Hall St in Potosi sits at the address Purcell Tire & Rubber Company has worked from since 1936. It retreads and repairs tire casings. It sells no tires and services no vehicles.

Where the company started

Purcell was founded in 1936 and reaches 90 years in 2026. This address is the company's corporate office as well as a working retread plant, which makes it the oldest point on the map of 64 locations.

That history is worth a sentence and no more, because what matters to a customer is what happens here now: casings come in, get inspected, and either go back out with new tread or do not. See About Purcell and 90 Years. 90 Stories. for the company story.

What a retread plant does

Retreading puts new tread onto a casing that still has structure in it. The casing is the expensive part of a tire to manufacture, and a well-treated one outlives several treads. Scrapping a tire when the tread wears out throws away the half that cost the most.

The sequence is inspection, buffing off the old tread, repairing what is repairable, applying and curing new tread rubber, and a final inspection. What comes back is a tire ready to run.

Hours worth noting

The plant opens at 9:00 AM, later than any other Purcell retread plant. The others start between 4:00 AM and 8:00 AM. Plan a visit around that rather than assuming an early start.

Where its casings come from

Missouri has eleven Purcell listings, nine of which collect casings for the retreading program: De Soto, Fenton, Jackson, Joplin, Kansas City, Osage Beach, Springfield, Viburnum and Washington.

Stores in neighboring states send casings to whichever Purcell plant is nearest, which for much of the midsection of the country is this one. You deal with the store you already use; the casings move without you arranging anything.

What ends a casing

Three things, all avoidable:

  • Running a tire flat. Even a short distance usually finishes the casing, and this is the most common cause of a rejection.
  • Damage left unrepaired, which works through the casing over time.
  • Chronic under-inflation, which builds heat and breaks the casing down internally where nobody can see it.

The habit that protects casings is stopping a unit the moment a tire fails and calling roadside assistance.
