Purcell Retread Plant in Salt Lake City, UT

The Purcell retread plant at 3350 W 2100 S runs from 4:00 AM, one of the two earliest starts in the company. It retreads and repairs tire casings, sells no tires and services no vehicles.

A plant in the middle of its own customers

Most Purcell stores send casings to a plant in another city, often another state. Salt Lake City is the exception: three other Purcell listings sit on the same street.

For a fleet running out of the Salt Lake Valley, that shortens the loop between pulling a casing and getting a retread back, and it makes the inspection conversation easy to have in person.

What this plant retreads

Eight casing categories: commercial truck, agricultural, OTR, industrial, light truck, passenger, trailer, and UTV and ATV. Tracks are not retreaded at any Purcell plant.

These are casings the plant works on rather than tires it sells. For tires in Salt Lake City, call the service store on (801) 974-0300, the Truck Tire Center on (801) 907-9477, or distribution on (801) 797-0960.

A 4:00 AM start

Only the Phoenix plant opens as early. The hours are a production shift rather than a counter, and the plant closes at 3:00 PM.

If you are dropping casings yourself rather than sending them through a store, that window is the thing to plan around.

What decides whether a casing passes

Inspection, and mostly what happened to the tire before it arrived. Three things end casings:

  • Running a tire flat. Even briefly, this usually finishes the casing, and it is the most common reason for rejection.
  • Damage left unrepaired, which works through the casing over time.
  • Chronic under-inflation, which builds heat and destroys the casing internally where nobody can see it.

For a fleet, the number worth knowing is the proportion of your casings currently passing. A low rate is about how the tires are being run, not about the tires.

What the early start is worth to a fleet

A plant that begins at 4:00 AM is a plant whose output is ready while the day is still starting, and for a fleet that is more useful than it sounds.

Casings dropped through a store late in the week can be in process before most yards open on Monday, and a changeover planned around a maintenance window has a better chance of the tires arriving when the window does. It is also why the plant closes at 3:00 PM: the shift has run its length by then.

If you are planning anything with a date attached, say so through the store rather than sending casings and hoping. Turnaround depends on what is already in the plant, and work that is expected is easier to place than work that turns up.

Questions

Questions about the Salt Lake City plant

Can I buy tires here?

No. The plant works on casings. For tires, call the service store, the Truck Tire Center or distribution.

What are the plant's hours?

Monday to Friday, 4:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

Which casings does it handle?

Commercial, agricultural, OTR, industrial, light truck, passenger, trailer, and UTV and ATV. Not tracks.

How do I get casings into the program?

Through the Purcell store you deal with. Six Utah locations collect casings, and the plant does the work and returns them ready to run.

Why was a casing rejected?

Inspection decides it, and the usual causes are a tire run flat, unrepaired damage, or chronic under-inflation. The store you dealt with can tell you which applied.
