Alignment protects the warranty you just paid for
Most tires carry some form of mileage coverage, and most of those have a condition attached that nobody reads until they are relying on it: the tire has to have been maintained properly, which includes correct inflation and correct alignment.
A set worn out early on a misaligned vehicle is worn out for a reason the tire did not cause. Uneven wear across a tire is visible evidence of that, and it is reasonable to expect it to be taken into account when a claim is assessed.
Which makes alignment at fitting less a recommendation than a protection. You are paying for coverage; aligning first is what keeps it meaningful.
The same applies to the records. An alignment done at fitting, with the readings kept, is documentation that the set was given a fair start.
Before, not after
Fit first and the new tires spend their early miles being scrubbed by the fault that finished the last set. By the time anybody books the alignment, the wear is already in the rubber and it does not come out.
Say when you call if both are due so the order is right. Alignment, then tires.
When else to book it
The national alignment page covers the occasions and what each symptom means. City driving supplies most of them here: curbs, construction plates, expansion joints and the potholes that follow a wet winter.
An alignment that will not hold is suspension, handled at this store, with the alignment afterwards.
