The system has to remove heat before it can keep up
A complaint that sounds like a fault and usually is not: the air conditioning takes a long time to make a difference when the vehicle has been standing in sun.
A parked car in strong sunlight accumulates a great deal of heat in its interior, and the air conditioning has to remove all of that before it can begin keeping the cabin comfortable. It is doing its job from the moment it is switched on; what it has not done yet is catch up.
The practical answer costs nothing. Open the windows for the first minute to push the hottest air out, run the system on fresh air rather than recirculation until the cabin is close to outside temperature, then switch to recirculation so it is cooling air that is already cool.
A system that is genuinely weak does something different. It struggles once the cabin has settled, or produces air that is noticeably less cold than it was last summer.
What usually goes wrong
Air conditioning is a sealed system, and the most common fault is that it is no longer sealed. Refrigerant escapes slowly through a seal, a hose or a fitting, and performance declines gradually enough that drivers adapt.
Other causes: a failed compressor, a condenser blocked at the front of the vehicle, an electrical fault, or a clogged cabin air filter where the problem is airflow rather than cooling.
What the service actually does
Finding where the refrigerant went, rather than replacing it and waiting. The national A/C service page sets out why that distinction matters and what the system is doing in winter as well as summer.
The part worth knowing before you call: describe the behavior rather than the conclusion. "Cold at first then fades," "cold on the highway and warm in traffic," and "never gets properly cold" point at three different things, and the description saves a step.
About this store
The Colorado Springs store runs sixteen services, opens at 7:00 AM, and is managed by Tyler Campbell. Denver and Loveland also offer A/C service.
