Less power at altitude is not necessarily a fault

A complaint that arrives often enough to be worth addressing directly: the vehicle feels down on power, particularly loaded or on a climb.

Air gets thinner as elevation increases, and an engine makes power by burning fuel with air. A naturally aspirated engine therefore produces less power high up than it does at sea level, and that is physics rather than a malfunction. Turbocharged engines are affected less, because the turbo compensates to a degree.

Which means somebody moving here from a lower elevation, or towing something up a grade for the first time, may be noticing something entirely normal.

What is not normal is a change. A vehicle that pulled a grade adequately last year and does not now has lost something, and that is worth diagnosing. The useful comparison is the vehicle against itself, not against how it felt somewhere else.

Describe the change, not just the symptom

When it started. Whether it was gradual or sudden. Whether it happens cold, warm, loaded, at idle or under load. What else changed around the same time, including any work done.

A code identifies a circuit that noticed something. The description is what identifies the fault, and replacing the part a code names is guessing with parts.

When to stop driving

Oil pressure warning. Temperature in the red, which on this terrain is the one to take most seriously. A new knock that changes with engine speed. A flashing check engine light.

See cooling system service for what to do if the gauge climbs on a grade.

What this store covers

Diagnosis and repair on cars and light trucks. Sixteen services at one address means a fault that turns out to be cooling, fuel delivery or something else stays in the same building.

Heavy truck engine work is not offered. The commercial side here is tires, alignment, OTR services, roadside assistance and fleet accounts.

About this store

The Colorado Springs store opens at 7:00 AM and is managed by Tyler Campbell. Denver and Loveland also offer engine repair.

Questions

Engine questions, Colorado Springs

The vehicle feels down on power at altitude. Is something wrong?

Not necessarily. A naturally aspirated engine makes less power in thinner air, which is normal. What matters is a change: a vehicle that pulled a grade last year and cannot now has lost something.

What should I tell you when I book?

When it started, whether it was gradual or sudden, whether it happens cold or warm, loaded or unloaded, and what else changed around the same time.

Which warnings mean stop?

Oil pressure, temperature in the red, a new knock that changes with engine speed, and a flashing check engine light.

Do you work on heavy truck engines?

No. Commercial work here is tires, alignment, OTR services, roadside assistance and fleet accounts.
