Repair or replace is a question you should be able to answer
On a work vehicle, a large engine repair is a business decision rather than a mechanical one, and it is the point where a lot of operations guess.
The numbers that make it answerable are not complicated. What the repair costs. What the vehicle is worth with it done. What a replacement would cost, including the time to find one and get it working. How long this vehicle would realistically have left afterwards, which depends on the rest of its condition rather than on the engine alone.
What you should get from a shop is the first number and an honest view of the fourth. A quote for a large repair on a vehicle with worn suspension, tired brakes and a rusting body is not the whole picture, and you should be told that rather than left to discover it.
Ask for it directly. Most shops will tell you if asked and few volunteer it.
Diagnosis before parts
A warning light reports that something measured outside its expected range. It does not identify a fault, and the same light covers problems that differ enormously in cost.
Replacing the part a code names is guessing with parts. What shortens a diagnosis is a description: when it happens, how often, hot or cold, at idle or under load, and what changed before it started.
When to stop driving
Oil pressure warning. Temperature in the red. A new knock that changes with engine speed. A flashing check engine light. Any of those is a tow rather than a drive in, and ignoring them is how a repair becomes a replacement.
What this store covers
Diagnosis and repair on cars and light trucks. Denver runs seventeen services, so a fault that turns out to be cooling system or suspension stays in one building.
Heavy truck engine work is not offered. The commercial side here is tires, alignment, OTR services, roadside assistance, mobile service and fleet accounts.
About this store
The Denver store is managed by Jake Perry. Colorado Springs and Loveland also offer engine repair.
See the national engine repair page for all 33 locations.
