Fuel systems have a winter of their own

Cold weather engine problems get blamed on batteries, which are often guilty. The fuel system is the other candidate and it is less well understood.

Water in fuel. Fuel tanks accumulate small amounts of water from condensation, particularly on vehicles that sit with a tank half empty through temperature swings. In warm weather it passes through unnoticed. In genuine cold it can freeze in a line or a filter, and the vehicle will not run or will not start.

Diesel in cold. Diesel fuel contains wax that begins to form crystals as the temperature falls, and those crystals block a filter. Winter blend fuel is treated to resist it, which is why where and when a vehicle was last filled matters.

Filters. A fuel filter that was adequate in October has less margin when the fuel is thicker and the pump is working harder.

A vehicle that cranks normally but will not start, or starts and then dies, on the coldest morning of the year is worth describing in those terms when you book. It points somewhere different from a slow crank.

Diagnosis before parts

The national engine repair page explains what a warning light does and does not tell you. The short version is that it names a circuit, not a fault.

What shortens a diagnosis is a description: when it happens, how often, at what temperature, at idle or under load, and what changed before it started.

When to stop driving

Oil pressure warning. Temperature in the red. A new knock that changes with engine speed. A flashing check engine light.

What this store covers

Diagnosis and repair on cars and light trucks. Sixteen services at one address means a fault that turns out to be cooling system or something else stays in the same building.

Heavy truck engine work is not offered. The commercial side here is tires, alignment, OTR services, roadside assistance and fleet accounts.

Questions

Engine questions, Loveland

It cranks fine but will not start on cold mornings. Battery?

Possibly not. Water in the fuel freezing in a line or filter, and diesel waxing in genuine cold, both produce that pattern, and they point somewhere different from a slow crank.

Does it matter where I buy diesel in winter?

Winter blend fuel is treated to resist waxing, so where and when a vehicle was last filled is relevant information when it will not run.

Which warnings mean stop?

Oil pressure, temperature in the red, a new knock that changes with engine speed, and a flashing check engine light.

Do you work on heavy truck engines?

No. Commercial work here is tires, alignment, OTR services, roadside assistance and fleet accounts.
