Heat is load times speed times distance

An OTR tire does not fail because it is old. It fails because it got hotter than it could shed, and three things decide how hot it gets.

Load, which is the machine plus whatever it is carrying. Speed, which on a haul road is usually higher than anybody estimates. Distance per cycle, which determines how long the tire spends generating heat before it gets a chance to cool.

Change any one of those and you change tire life, which is why a site that lengthens its haul, loads heavier, or speeds its cycle up will start losing tires without having changed the tires.

It is also why the fix is often operational rather than a purchase. Slowing a haul road slightly, shortening a cycle, or correcting pressures can do more than specifying a different tire, and costs nothing.

Pressure is the variable you control daily

Under-inflation makes a tire flex more, and flexing generates the heat that destroys casings from the inside where no visual inspection will find it.

Scheduled cold pressure checks are the plainest work available on a site and the first thing dropped when a crew is busy. A site losing tires without an obvious cause should check this before it changes anything else.

Repair before replacement

The national OTR services page sets out when an injury is repairable and why, on a tire of this value, repair is frequently the right answer.

On a site where heat is the main enemy, the repair question matters doubly: a tire pulled for an injury may have a sound casing, while one pulled late for wear may not.

What the store covers

Fitting and change-outs, repair, and casing inspection. Colorado Springs carries OTR tires and every other Purcell category, and collects casings for retreading at the Denver plant. Wheel refurbishing is here as well.

Mobile service is not offered. Denver is the Colorado location for it, and no Colorado location runs a managed mining program.

About this store

Questions

OTR questions, Colorado Springs

We changed nothing and started losing tires. Why?

Check whether the work changed: a longer haul, heavier loads or a faster cycle all raise heat, which is what ends OTR tires.

What is the first thing to check?

Cold pressures. Under-inflation makes a tire flex and generate heat internally, where no visual inspection will find it.

Can a cut OTR tire be repaired?

Frequently. Whether a given injury qualifies is judged with the tire in hand, which is the reason to send it rather than decide on the machine.

Do you come to the site?

Mobile service is not offered from this store. Denver is the Colorado location for it.
