Everybody discovers it in the same week
Air conditioning is the one system nobody tests before they need it. It gets switched off in September and switched on during the first genuinely hot day of the year, which is also the day every other driver in town does the same thing.
That is why shops fill up for air conditioning work in a narrow window, and why a repair that would have been straightforward in April becomes a wait in July.
Testing it costs nothing. Run the system for a few minutes on a mild day in spring and pay attention to how cold the air actually gets and how quickly. If it is weaker than you remember, that is the moment to book, not two months later.
What weak cooling usually means
Air conditioning is a sealed system, and the most common cause of poor performance is that it is no longer sealed. Refrigerant escapes slowly through a seal, a hose or a fitting, and the decline is gradual enough that people adjust to it.
Other causes exist. A failed compressor. A condenser blocked with debris at the front of the vehicle. An electrical fault. A cabin air filter so clogged that the problem is airflow rather than cooling, which is a cheap fix and worth ruling out first.
A recharge is not a repair
If the refrigerant is low, it left through a leak. Recharging without finding the leak buys a season and the same conversation next year.
The service finds the loss, repairs it, and restores the correct charge. Overcharging cools worse rather than better.
It works in winter too
On most vehicles the compressor runs whenever the defroster is on, drying the air before it reaches the glass. A failed system clears a fogged windshield more slowly, which is a safety point rather than a comfort one.
Running the system briefly each month keeps the seals lubricated.
