Not every warning light means the same thing

Dashboard lights get treated as one category, which is why some get ignored that should not be and others cause alarm that is not warranted.

The oil pressure light is the serious one. It is not telling you the oil is low; it is telling you the oil is not being circulated at pressure. Continuing to drive can destroy an engine in a short distance. Stop the vehicle somewhere safe and switch it off.

The temperature warning is the other immediate one. An overheating engine damages itself quickly, and the damage is expensive. Stop, let it cool, and do not open a hot cooling system.

The battery or charging light means the vehicle is running on what is in the battery. It will keep going until it does not, and the distance available is limited.

The check engine light covers an enormous range. Steady, with the vehicle driving normally, it usually means book it in. Flashing is different and means stop driving.

Knowing which of those you have is the difference between a repair and a replacement.

Diagnosis is the first thing being paid for

A code says which circuit noticed something. It does not say what is wrong, and the same code covers faults that differ enormously in cost.

Replacing the part a code names is guessing with parts, and it is how a vehicle acquires three new components and the original symptom. What shortens a diagnosis is a clear description: when it happens, how often, hot or cold, at idle or under load, and what changed before it started.

When a repair may not be worth it

Sometimes it is not, and you should be told that rather than quoted for it.

A large repair on a vehicle with other problems is a decision for the owner with the whole picture in front of them. Ask for that conversation when the number is big.

Questions

Engine questions, Idaho Falls

Which warning lights mean stop immediately?

Oil pressure and temperature. Both can cause expensive damage within a short distance. A flashing check engine light also means stop.

The check engine light is on and the car drives fine. Is it urgent?

Steady, with normal driving, it usually means book it in rather than stop. The light covers a very wide range of faults, which is what the diagnosis narrows down.

Why not just replace the part the code names?

Because the code identifies a circuit rather than a fault. Replacing parts by code is how a vehicle ends up with new components and the same symptom.

What should I tell you when I book?

When it happens, how often, hot or cold, at idle or under load, and what changed before it started.
