Click, slow crank, or cranks but will not start
"It will not start" is the most common complaint a shop hears, and it covers three different problems. Which one you have depends on what happens when you turn the key or press the button, and noticing the difference saves time and money.
A single click, or rapid clicking, and nothing else. The starter is not turning the engine. That usually points to the battery, a poor battery connection, or the starter itself, rather than the engine.
The engine turns over slowly, laboring, and may or may not catch. The starter is getting some power but not enough. A weak battery, corroded terminals, or a charging problem is the usual suspect, especially on a cold morning.
The engine turns over at normal speed but never fires. The starting system is doing its job. The engine is not getting fuel, spark or both, and this is where engine diagnosis actually begins.
Only the third is really an engine problem. The first two are electrical, and treating them as engine faults wastes the visit.
What to tell the store
Which of the three it is. Whether it happened suddenly or got worse over a few days. Whether lights and the radio work normally. Whether the vehicle had been sitting. If a jump start got it going, say so; that points away from the engine.
What this store covers
Engine diagnosis and repair, with cooling system and scheduled maintenance at the same address, so a fault that turns out to be something else stays in one building. Confirm your vehicle type when you book. The national engine repair page covers what a warning light does and does not report.
