Ask whether the alignment is in the suspension quote
Many suspension repairs change the vehicle's alignment as a matter of course. Replacing struts, tie rod ends, control arms or ball joints means unbolting parts that set the angles of the wheels. When they go back together, the angles are close to where they were, but close is not the same as correct.
That is why an alignment usually belongs at the end of a suspension job. Skip it, and the new parts sit at slightly wrong angles that wear the tires. The vehicle may drive acceptably, so nothing prompts the owner to go back, and the tires take the cost over the following months.
The practical point is about the quote. When you are comparing prices for suspension work, check whether each one includes an alignment afterwards. A quote that leaves it out can look lower and cost more once the tires are counted.
Questions worth asking before you agree to the work
- Which parts are being replaced, and why? Worn, damaged or leaking, and how it was found.
- Will the alignment need setting afterwards? For most steering and front suspension parts, the answer is yes.
- Is it included in the price? If not, what does it add?
- Should anything be done in pairs? Some parts are normally replaced on both sides of an axle so the vehicle stays even.
None of those questions is unusual, and a clear answer to each makes the decision yours.
For a commuter
If the vehicle is how you get to work, ask how long the job and the alignment take together. The store opens at 7:00 AM, so an early drop-off gives the most of the day.
