The battery light is about charging, not the battery
A red light shaped like a battery comes on while driving, and the natural conclusion is that the battery is dying. Usually it is not. That light reports the charging system: the alternator and the belt that turns it.
The difference matters because of what happens next. While the engine runs, the alternator powers the vehicle and recharges the battery. When it stops doing that, the vehicle carries on running on the battery alone, which feels completely normal for a while. Then, as the battery drains, things start to fail in sequence: the radio and accessories, the dash, the lights, and eventually the engine itself.
A battery light is therefore a countdown, and its length depends on what you are running. Switching off the A/C, the radio and anything plugged in buys time.
What to do with that time
Head for somewhere useful rather than somewhere far. If the light came on along with a rising temperature gauge, stop: the same belt often drives the water pump, and that is a cooling system emergency.
If it is the light alone, drive straight to the store if it is close, or to a safe place to stop if it is not. Replacing a battery that is not the fault, and then breaking down again the next day, is the common mistake.
Other charging symptoms
Headlights that dim at idle and brighten when the engine revs, a slow crank on a warm morning, or a whining noise that rises with engine speed are all worth mentioning when you book. They narrow the search.
