The smell from the vents is information
Drivers describe A/C trouble by temperature: it blows warm, or not cold enough. A smell is just as useful, and it is usually ignored because it seems like a nuisance rather than a fault.
Three smells are worth telling the store about, because each points somewhere different.
Musty or damp. The most common one, usually strongest in the first minute after switching on. Moisture collects on the evaporator behind the dash, and in a humid summer that is a good place for mildew. It is not dangerous, but it does not clear up by itself, and the cabin filter is often part of it.
Sweet, like syrup. This one matters. A sweet smell inside the cabin, sometimes with a film on the inside of the windshield, can be engine coolant from the heater core. That is a cooling system fault rather than an A/C one, and it is worth booking promptly.
Hot or burning when the A/C is on. A compressor clutch or a belt working harder than it should. Switch the A/C off and get it looked at before it fails completely.
For a vehicle you commute in
If the car is how you get to work, the A/C is not a comfort item in July. Bring it in at 7:00 AM on the way, describe the smell and when it appears, and the check can start while you are at your job.
What the check covers
Pressures, the compressor and its clutch, the condenser, the cabin filter and leaks. The national A/C service page explains why a system that keeps needing a recharge has a leak.
This is the Commercial & Consumer listing. Purcell's other Paducah store on Hinkleville Rd also offers A/C service for cars and light trucks. Scheduled maintenance is here too.
Other stores nearby
Paducah Consumer on Hinkleville Rd and Princeton also offer A/C service.
