Know your controls before you decide it is broken
A good share of "the A/C is weak" turns out to be how the controls are set. That is worth five minutes in the driveway before you book, especially in a vehicle that is new to you.
Recirculate. The button with the arrow curling back on itself. With it on, the system cools the air already inside the car instead of pulling in hot air from outside. On a hot afternoon it cools a parked car down noticeably quicker. Many drivers have never pressed it.
Temperature and fan. Turn the temperature all the way to cold and the fan up. If the air only gets cool when the temperature dial is at the very end, note that. If the air is cold but barely moving, that points somewhere different from warm air blowing hard.
The A/C button itself. On many vehicles the fan can run without the compressor. If the A/C light is off, the air is just outside air moving around.
Once the controls are set right, what is left is a real symptom, and a real symptom is worth booking.
What to tell the store
Three things narrow it down quickly:
- Is the air warm, or cool but weak?
- Does it get worse in traffic or at a stop, and better at speed?
- Did it fade over a season, or stop one day?
A slow fade over a summer usually points to a leak. A sudden stop points to a part. That difference shapes the visit before the car is even in the bay.
What the check covers
Pressures, the compressor, the condenser at the front of the car, the cabin airflow and leaks. The national A/C service page explains why a system that needs a recharge every year has a leak somewhere.
If the engine temperature is climbing as well, that is cooling system work. Both are here, along with scheduled maintenance, so one visit can cover more than one job.
