Learn to read the dipstick between visits
An oil change every few months does a lot of the work. Checking the level yourself in between does the rest, and it is one of the few car jobs any owner can do in under two minutes. If this is your first car, it is the one to learn.
Park on level ground and let it sit. Check with the engine off for a few minutes so the oil has drained back down. Some vehicles say to check warm and some cold; the owner's manual will tell you which.
Pull, wipe, push, pull again. The dipstick usually has a brightly colored handle. Pull it out, wipe it clean, push it all the way back in, then pull it out again and read it. The first pull is always smeared and tells you nothing.
Read between the two marks. There is a low mark and a full mark, sometimes a crosshatched area between them. The oil line should sit in that range.
Top up with the right oil only. If it is low, add a small amount of the grade listed in the manual or on the oil cap, then check again. Overfilling is a problem too, so add a little at a time.
Some newer vehicles have no dipstick and report the level electronically instead; the manual explains how to read it.
What the level is telling you
A small drop between changes can be normal on some engines. A level that falls noticeably every few weeks means the engine is burning or leaking oil, and that is worth mentioning when you book. Oil that looks milky rather than brown or black is a reason to call before driving far.
What the visit includes
Oil and filter changed to the grade the manufacturer lists, and a quick look at the rest. The national oil change page covers what the service includes. Anything coming due goes on scheduled maintenance, and a leak or a warning light is engine repair, both here.
Other stores nearby
The Paducah Commercial & Consumer store and Princeton also change oil.
