Rubber does not last here the way it does elsewhere

A suspension is full of rubber: bushings, mounts, boots and the flexible parts that stop metal contacting metal. All of it is doing a mechanical job and all of it is a material with a limited life.

Sun and heat shorten that life considerably. Ultraviolet exposure and high temperatures make rubber harden, shrink and crack over years, and the parts on a vehicle's underside get plenty of both: radiated heat from the ground, direct sun when parked, and a vehicle that is simply hot for months at a time.

The result is that a vehicle here can have suspension rubber at the end of its usable life while the metal parts around it are barely worn. That is a different situation from a vehicle in a mild climate, where the rubber and the metal tend to age at closer to the same rate.

Which means two things worth knowing.

Age matters as much as mileage. A low-mileage vehicle that has spent ten summers here has old suspension rubber regardless of the odometer.

The symptoms arrive as noise rather than as ride. Hardened, cracked bushings produce clunks and knocks over bumps before they produce any obvious change in how the vehicle handles.

What that means for a vehicle you are keeping

A vehicle worth keeping is worth having the rubber assessed on, and it is a visual inspection rather than a diagnosis. Cracked, perished or displaced bushings and torn boots are visible from underneath to somebody who knows where to look.

Torn boots are the ones to catch early. A boot exists to keep dust out of a joint, and in this climate there is plenty of dust waiting to get in. A joint that has lost its boot has a much shorter life ahead of it than one that has not.

Then align

Replacing components changes the geometry, so alignment is the closing step. Both are done at this store, including Saturday mornings.

The national suspension repair page covers the ride and handling symptoms.

Questions

Suspension questions, Pahrump

My vehicle has low mileage. Can the suspension still be worn?

The rubber can be. Sun and heat harden and crack bushings and boots over years regardless of distance covered, so age matters as much as the odometer here.

What does it feel like?

Noise before handling. Hardened or cracked bushings produce clunks and knocks over bumps well before anything obvious changes about how the vehicle drives.

What should be caught early?

Torn boots. A boot keeps dust out of a joint, and a joint that has lost its boot in this climate has a much shorter life ahead of it.

Does an alignment follow the repair?

It should. Replacing components changes the geometry, and both are done at this store.
