Put the number on fuel, not just tires
Alignment is usually justified on tire wear, and that case is real. The other half of the case shows up at the pump and is easier to miss.
A misaligned axle does not roll straight. Its tires are dragged slightly sideways for every mile they turn. That scrubbing is resistance, and the engine has to overcome it on every mile of the trip. On a single trip it is invisible. Across a tractor's year on the interstate, a little extra resistance on every mile adds up.
The trouble is that nobody sees it as an alignment problem. Fuel economy moves for a dozen reasons: weather, loads, routes, drivers. A tractor that is a little worse than its sisters for months is rarely sent for an alignment on that basis alone.
How to spot it in your own numbers
Compare like with like. Tractors of the same model, on similar routes, with similar loads, should return similar fuel figures. One that runs consistently worse than the group is worth checking for alignment, especially if its steer or drive tires are also wearing differently from the others.
That comparison costs nothing if the fleet already records fuel by unit, and it turns alignment from a tire decision into a fleet decision.
When to align regardless
- After new steer tires go on.
- After any front end, suspension or axle work.
- After a hard impact with a curb, dock or debris.
- When a unit joins the fleet with no alignment record.
Do the trailer at the same time
A trailer out of line pulls on the tractor too. Trailer alignment is offered here, and so is tire and wheel balancing for a vibration that is not alignment. The national heavy-duty truck alignment page covers what the measurement includes.
