Idle hours count, even when the odometer does not move

Oil change intervals are usually set in miles, and for most vehicles miles are a fair measure of how hard the engine has worked. A yard truck or a support pickup breaks that link.

Those vehicles spend hours parked with the engine running: keeping a cab warm or cool, powering a light, waiting on a unit. The odometer does not move, but the engine is running, the oil is circulating and slowly breaking down, and combustion byproducts are building up in it. A truck that has idled for a few hundred hours can need fresh oil long before the mileage says so.

Many modern pickups track engine hours alongside miles, and many owner's manuals treat extended idling as a heavier-duty condition with a shorter interval.

Use both clocks

For any vehicle that idles a lot, track engine hours as well as miles, and change the oil on whichever comes due first. If the vehicle has no hour meter, a rough log of idle time is better than none.

A driver's own pickup that is used mostly for commuting does not need this. The yard truck that runs from shift start to shift end does.

While it is in

An oil change is a sensible moment for a quick look at the other fluids, belts, tires and lights. Anything due can go on scheduled maintenance, and a warning light or a rough running engine is engine repair, both here. The national oil change page covers what the service includes.

Questions

Oil change questions, Salt Lake City

Our yard truck barely moves. Does it still need oil changes?

Yes, if the engine runs for long periods. Idling breaks down oil even when the odometer does not move.

How should we time changes on a truck that idles a lot?

Track engine hours as well as miles, and change the oil on whichever comes due first.

What if the truck has no hour meter?

Keep a rough log of idle time. It is better than relying on mileage alone.

Do you check anything else?

Fluids, belts, tires and lights are a quick look at the same visit.
