The rim is the dangerous part
An OTR tire is large and heavy, but the real hazard in changing one is usually not the tire. It is the wheel.
Many equipment wheels are multi-piece: a base with a removable flange held by a lock ring. A tire on that kind of wheel holds a large volume of air at pressure, and the lock ring is the only thing keeping the pieces together. A ring that is damaged, corroded, mismatched or not fully seated can come apart as the tire is inflated, with enough force to cause serious injury.
That is why OTR fitting is work for trained technicians with the right equipment, and not a job for whoever is nearest with an air line.
What this means on site
- Do not inflate a tire on a multi-piece wheel without proper restraint and the training to do it safely.
- Do not add air to a tire that has been run flat or very low without having it inspected first. The tire and the wheel components may both be damaged.
- Keep wheel parts matched. Rings and flanges from different wheels or different makers are not interchangeable.
- Report damage to rings and flanges the same way you would report damage to the tire.
None of that slows the work down. It keeps the people doing it safe.
Fitting and repair
Change-outs, fitting and repairs on off-highway tires are done through this store. A tire with a cut may be repairable, and the assessment decides. Casings worth another life go through retreading, and equipment can sit on a fleet account with the trucks.
The national OTR services page covers fitting, repair and supply in more detail.
Other stores nearby
North Las Vegas, NV and Kingman, AZ also offer OTR services.
About this store
The Washington store carries all nine Purcell tire categories, including OTR and industrial, and is managed by Steve Williams.
