A tire sitting in the yard is still getting older

Sites hold spare OTR tires because the lead times justify it, and then the spares sit. Nobody counts that as use, so nobody counts it as wear.

Rubber ages regardless. It oxidizes, it hardens, and it does so faster in sunlight and faster again at temperature. A tire that has leaned against a fence in the open for four summers is not the tire that was delivered, even though nothing has been driven on it.

That matters most at the moment you reach for it, which is always a moment when a machine is down and nobody wants to hear it.

Two things follow, and neither costs anything. Store spares out of direct sunlight and off the ground, upright rather than stacked where you can. Then rotate the stock: use the oldest spare and replace it, rather than always reaching for whichever is nearest the door.

Check the date before you fit it

Every tire carries a manufacture date on the sidewall. On a spare that has been held for a while it is worth reading before it goes on a machine, particularly if the tire has been stored outdoors.

Ask the store what it would consider acceptable for your application. It is a short conversation and it is better had before a change-out than during one.

Repair before replacement

The national OTR services page sets out when an injury is repairable and why, on a tire of this value, repair is frequently the right answer.

The point worth adding on a stored spare: if the tire you were about to fit has been in the yard for years, having the damaged one assessed may leave you better off than reaching for the spare. Hot Springs carries OTR tires and every other Purcell category.

Questions

OTR questions, Hot Springs

Do stored spares go off?

Rubber ages whether or not it is used, and faster in sunlight and heat. A spare held outdoors for years is not the tire that was delivered.

How should spares be stored?

Out of direct sunlight, off the ground, upright rather than stacked where practical. Rotate stock so the oldest gets used rather than the nearest.

Can a cut OTR tire be repaired?

Frequently, and at that cost it is worth establishing before replacing. The assessment is made with the tire in hand.

Do you run a mining program?

Not from this store. Jonesboro, Mabelvale and Springdale run managed mining programs in Arkansas.
