It is the appointment that catches things early
An oil change is a small job that creates a large opportunity, and the opportunity is not the oil.
It is the only routine occasion when a vehicle is raised, with somebody underneath it, at an interval short enough that problems get caught while they are still small. Nothing else on a maintenance schedule happens that often.
What that means in practice is that a vehicle serviced regularly tends to have its problems found as problems, and a vehicle serviced rarely tends to have them found as failures. The difference is not the oil in either case. It is how often somebody looked.
What to ask them to look at
Ask rather than assume, because a fast oil change is exactly that unless somebody requests more.
- Tread depth and the wear pattern, which says whether anything is doing something to the tires. See alignment.
- Brake condition, which is visible once a wheel is off and is otherwise guessed at.
- Leaks, which are far easier to see from below than to deduce from a parking space.
- Suspension and steering components, which wear silently. See suspension repair.
- Coolant condition, if it has been a few years. See cooling system.
Seventeen services at one address means anything found is dealt with here rather than booked somewhere else.
Which interval applies
Short trips, idling, stop-start work, towing and carrying weight all shorten it, which the national oil change page explains. City driving supplies most of those.
