A tire repair changes the balance
This is the balancing fact most people never hear, and it explains a vibration that appears out of nowhere on a vehicle that was fine the day before.
A puncture repair adds material to one spot on the tire. It is not much, and on a slow-moving wheel it would not matter. At highway speed, a small weight concentrated in one place is exactly what balancing exists to cancel out.
Which means a tire that has been repaired should be rebalanced before it goes back on, every time. A repair done without that step is a repair that often produces a complaint a week later, and the complaint gets attributed to the repair having failed when the repair is fine.
If a tire has been plugged or patched somewhere and the vehicle has vibrated since, that is the first thing to check.
The repair that nobody rebalances
The reason this gets missed is that tire repairs are often done somewhere other than where the tires were bought, and quickly. A vehicle comes in with a puncture, leaves with it fixed, and nothing about the visit suggested a balancing machine was needed.
If you had a tire repaired and the vehicle has not felt the same since, that is the thing to say when you call. It is a quick answer and it saves looking in the wrong places.
The national tire and wheel balancing page covers what balancing protects and when it is worth asking for. Everything on that list applies here, with the repair case added to it.
What else produces the same complaint
A vibration that survives a balance usually means the rim rather than the tire, and wheel refurbishing is offered at this store.
A vibration present at every speed, or accompanied by a pull, is not balance at all. That is alignment or a worn component, both handled here, which means the question can be worked through in one visit rather than guessed at across three.
