The noise that tells you where to look
Suspension complaints usually arrive as a noise, and the noise is informative if you pay attention to when it happens.
A clunk over bumps, worse on one side, usually points at a worn link, bushing or mount. It is the most common suspension noise there is.
A creak or groan at low speed, turning into a driveway or over a speed bump, usually points at dry or perished bushings.
A knock when turning the wheel at a standstill is a different family of parts from a knock when driving over a bump.
A rhythmic noise that changes with road speed is usually not suspension at all, and is more often a tire or a bearing.
Reproducing the noise matters more than describing it. If you can make it happen, say what you do to make it happen, and the diagnosis starts a long way ahead.
What the parts are doing
Keeping the tires in contact with the road over a surface that is not flat. A worn shock lets a wheel keep moving after a bump instead of settling it, and for that moment the tire is carrying less load than it should.
Winter roads here give suspension plenty of opportunity to show its age. Freeze and thaw breaks pavement up, and a vehicle crossing that all season is working every joint and bushing it has.
Why an alignment will not stay put
Worn components let the geometry shift under load. The vehicle is correct on the rack, and wrong as soon as it is driven, which arrives at a shop as a complaint that the alignment was done badly.
Replacing what is worn and then aligning is the only order that works. Car and light truck alignment is offered at this store, so both happen in one visit.
What it shows up as on the tires
Cupped or scalloped wear is a suspension pattern rather than an alignment one, and it is worth showing to somebody rather than replacing a set and forgetting about it.
