On a county road, send a pin rather than a description
The Princeton store covers a wide rural area, and a good part of it is county roads and farm lanes rather than highway. That changes what a driver can usefully say about where they are.
On an interstate there is a mile marker. On a county road there may be nothing but fields, a fence line and a road name the driver half remembers. Directions built from that ("past the grain bins, near a church") lose time, because the service vehicle has to find the unit before it can fix anything.
Almost every driver carries the answer in their pocket. A phone's map app can share the exact position as a pin or as coordinates, and that is a complete location on any road, named or not. Send it as soon as the unit is safely stopped, then follow it with the road name and the direction of travel if you know them.
Two things make it work every time:
- Practice it once. A driver who has never shared a location is learning how under stress. Show every driver where the button is, on their own phone, before they need it.
- Know the dead spots. Some rural stretches have weak signal. If the pin will not send, a road name plus the nearest crossroads will do, and noting crossroads as you pass them is a habit worth having on routes with poor coverage.
What to have ready on the call
The location, the unit, the tire size from the sidewall, which position failed, and whether the load can be moved. Commercial units are covered: tractors, trailers, straight trucks and equipment.
A unit recovered to this store can be dealt with properly, since Princeton runs heavy-duty truck alignment and sixteen services in all. Authorization is quickest when it is settled in advance on a fleet account.
