A click every few seconds from under the hood

Switch the A/C on in most vehicles and the compressor engages with a single click, then runs. It will cycle off and on during a drive, which is normal, but the gaps are long enough that nobody notices.

A system that clicks on and off every few seconds is doing something different, and it is one of the more useful sounds a driver can report.

That rapid cycling usually means the system is reading a pressure it does not like and protecting itself. Low refrigerant is the common cause. As the charge drops, pressure falls quickly once the compressor starts, a switch shuts it off, pressure recovers, and the cycle repeats. A faulty pressure switch or a wiring problem can produce the same pattern with a perfectly good charge.

On a farm pickup or a hauling truck the symptom is easy to miss. The cab is loud, the windows are often down, and the air coming out may still feel reasonably cool. Meanwhile the compressor is starting and stopping many times more often than it was designed to, and that wear lands on the clutch and the compressor itself.

How to check it yourself

With the engine idling and the A/C on, open the hood and listen near the front of the engine for the clutch engaging. Watch the center of the compressor pulley if you can see it: it spins with the belt when engaged and stops when it is not.

A steady run with occasional pauses is normal. Engaging and releasing every few seconds is worth booking. Keep hands and loose clothing well clear of the belt and fan while the engine is running.

What to tell the store

  • How often it clicks, roughly.
  • Whether the air still feels cool, gets warmer over a drive, or varies.
  • Whether the system has been recharged before, and when.

What a check covers

Pressures on both sides, the compressor clutch, the pressure switches and their wiring, and a search for the leak. The national A/C service page explains why a system that keeps needing a recharge has a leak.

If the engine temperature is also climbing, cooling system work is in the same building, as is scheduled maintenance.

De Soto and Paducah, KY also offer A/C service.

Questions

A/C questions, Jackson

The A/C clicks on and off every few seconds. Is that normal?

No. Normal cycling has long gaps. Rapid cycling usually means low refrigerant or a pressure switch fault, and it wears the compressor clutch.

The air still feels cool. Does it matter?

Yes. The cooling can feel acceptable while the compressor starts and stops far more often than it should.

How can I tell what the compressor is doing?

With the engine idling and the A/C on, listen for the clutch and watch the pulley center. Keep clear of the belt and fan.

What should I mention when I book?

How often it clicks, how cool the air feels, and any past recharge.
