An engine that stalls as it rolls to a stop
Few faults are as unnerving as this one. The vehicle drives normally, the driver slows for a stop sign or a turn, and just as it comes to rest the engine dies. It usually restarts. It may not do it again for a week.
The moment it happens is the clue. At cruising speed the engine is getting plenty of air and fuel and running well above idle. As the vehicle slows, the engine has to settle into idle on its own, and anything that upsets that balance shows up right then.
Common causes are a leak in the intake that lets in air the engine is not measuring, a dirty or failing part that controls the idle, or a sensor giving the engine computer the wrong picture. On some vehicles the transmission is involved instead. Each points to a different repair, which is why the detail matters.
What to note before you book
- When it happens. Only when slowing to a stop, or also when pulling away?
- Hot or cold. First thing in the morning, or after a long drive?
- With the A/C on or off. The A/C adds load at idle and can make a marginal engine stall.
- Any warning light, and whether it came on before or after the stall.
Those four answers narrow the search more than any single test, especially for a fault that will not perform on demand in the shop.
A safety point in the meantime
An engine that stalls also loses power assistance to the steering and, after a stop or two, to the brakes. Leave more room than usual and avoid situations, like a left turn across traffic, where a stall would leave you stranded.

A fault tied to overheating is cooling system work, and overdue items are scheduled maintenance. When you book, confirm the type of vehicle so the right bay is planned. The national engine repair page covers what warning lights report.
