A clunk when you change direction
Back out of a parking space, stop, shift into drive, and pull away with a touch of the brake. On some vehicles that produces a single clunk or knock from one corner, once in each direction, and nothing the rest of the drive.
That pattern usually comes from the brake pads moving in their bracket. Pads sit in a carrier with a little room to slide, held by small metal clips and shims. When those clips are worn, missing, rusted or the wrong fit, the pad can shift slightly when the wheel changes direction, and it hits the end of the bracket as the brakes apply.
The noise itself is not dangerous. What it reports is worth hearing, because the same worn hardware lets pads sit unevenly, wear faster, and squeal, and a pad that is loose in its bracket is not being held the way it was designed.
What else makes a similar sound
A clunk when changing direction can also come from the suspension or the drivetrain, which is why the detail matters.
- Only with the brake applied points toward the pads and their hardware.
- Without touching the brake, over bumps or when turning, points toward suspension repair.
- When accelerating from a stop, brake or not, can be a mount or a driveline part.
What to ask at a brake job
Ask whether the pad hardware is being replaced along with the pads. Clips and shims are small parts, and a brake job that reuses tired ones can bring the noise back. Ask too whether the caliper slides are cleaned and lubricated, since a pad that cannot move freely wears unevenly.
When to come back
A pull to one side, a pulsing pedal, a pedal that sinks, or a grinding sound at any point is a reason to book rather than wait. A pull that is not brakes is often car and light truck alignment, at the same address. The national brake repair page covers the warning signs that a brake job is due.
