A vehicle that sags overnight has an air suspension leak
More SUVs, pickups and larger sedans now ride on air suspension rather than steel springs, either from the factory or as a load-leveling system at the rear. It rides well and levels the vehicle under load. It also fails in a way that steel springs never do, and the first sign is easy to recognize.
The vehicle is level when parked in the evening and visibly lower at one corner, or at one end, in the morning.
Air springs are rubber bags holding pressurized air. As they age, the rubber can crack and let air escape slowly. While the engine runs, a compressor tops the system back up, so the vehicle drives normally and the problem hides. Overnight, with nothing running, the leak wins and that corner settles.
Why it should not wait
- The compressor works harder. Making up for a leak every day means it runs far more than designed, and compressors wear out. A leaking spring left alone often turns into a leaking spring and a failed compressor.
- The vehicle may sit low on the road. If the compressor cannot keep up, ride height drops, which affects handling, headlight aim and how the tires wear.
- The warning light comes late. Many systems only show a fault once the compressor has given up trying.
What to note before you book
Which corner or end sags, how far, and how long it takes. A photo of the vehicle in the morning beside one of it in the evening shows the store exactly what is happening. Mention any noise from the compressor running more often or for longer than it used to.
Ride height affects car and light truck alignment, and a vehicle that has been running low may want one after the repair. A pull when braking is brake repair, both at this store. The national suspension repair page covers the clunks and wander that point to worn steel parts.
Other stores nearby
Springfield and Springdale, AR also offer suspension repair.
