The spare you do not have is the problem
Most sites discover their OTR tire policy during a failure. The machine is down, the size is not on a shelf anywhere nearby, and the answer is a delivery from somewhere else entirely.
Eastern Montana makes that worse than it is in most places. Large OTR sizes are not stocked deeply anywhere, and the nearest Purcell locations outside this state are in Idaho and Utah.
The response is unglamorous and it works: decide in advance which sizes you cannot afford to be without, and have that conversation with the store in a quiet week rather than during a stoppage. Knowing what is available, what can be got and how long it takes is worth more than any single tire.
What the work covers
Fitting and change-outs on tires the size of the machine they belong to, repair, and inspection of casings for damage that does not show from outside.
Repair is the part that saves real money. An OTR tire is among the most expensive consumables on a machine, and a repairable injury returned to service is a tire you do not buy. Size and position of the injury decide whether it qualifies, which is judged with the tire in hand.
A tire scrapped in the yard on sight is a decision taken without that judgment, and it is the most common way money leaves a site unnoticed.
Inspection finds what inspection finds
The failures that look sudden rarely are. A tire run under-inflated builds heat it cannot shed, and the damage accumulates inside the casing where nothing visible reports it.
Scheduled pressure checks are the plainest intervention available on a site. They are also the first thing dropped when a crew is busy, which is why a program that includes them is worth more than one that does not.
Alongside the machines, the trucks
Billings runs sixteen services, so the equipment and the trucks hauling to and from it are handled at one address: heavy-duty truck alignment, trailer alignment, wheel refurbishing, retreading and 24-hour roadside assistance.
Mobile service is not offered here. Seven Purcell locations run it, none of them in Montana.
About this store
The Billings store carries OTR tires along with every other Purcell category, is open Monday to Friday, 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM, and is managed by Larry Wagoner. Belgrade, MT also offers OTR services.
See the national OTR services page for all 41 locations.
