Collection, not production
Purcell runs seven retread plants and none is in Montana. Billings works with Purcell's retreading program: casings are taken in here, sent to a plant, and returned ready to run. The store handles transport both ways.
The nearest plants are Boise, ID and Salt Lake City, UT. Billings is one of 54 Purcell locations collecting casings.
Position decides how well a tire retreads
Retreading is often discussed as though every tire is a candidate. In a fleet, position is what separates them.
Trailer and drive positions usually return the soundest casings, because they are worn by load and mileage rather than by steering input. Steer tires are the position where a problem elsewhere shows up as damage here: a misaligned truck scrubs a steer away on one shoulder, and the casing goes with it.
That makes alignment a retreading issue rather than only a tire issue. Heavy-duty truck alignment and trailer alignment are both offered here, which is the practical reason they belong in the same conversation.
The tread that comes back
A retread is a specification decision, not a default. The tread pattern applied to a returning casing can match what the tire had or can match what the unit now does.
Say what the unit's work is when the casings go in: long highway miles, regional stop-start, on and off unpaved surfaces, or site work. A fleet that changed what its trucks do and kept ordering the same tread is paying for a pattern it no longer needs.
Keeping a casing alive long enough to use it
Three things end casings, and none of them is mileage: running a tire flat, under-inflation that builds heat where nothing visible reports it, and damage left unrepaired.
Winter supplies the second one without anyone deciding to. Cold air lowers pressure, and a tire that was correct in October is low in December. Pressure checks through the season cost nothing and are what keeps a Montana fleet's casings alive.
About this store
The Billings store is open Monday to Friday, 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM, managed by Larry Wagoner, and carries all nine Purcell tire categories. Belgrade, MT also collects casings. Tracks are not retreaded at any Purcell plant.
See the national retreading page for how the program works and for all 54 collecting locations.
