The store collects, a plant does the work
Purcell runs seven retread plants, none of them in Montana. Belgrade works with Purcell's retreading program: casings are taken in here and sent on, and the store handles transport in both directions.
The two nearest plants are Boise, ID and Salt Lake City, UT. Belgrade is one of 54 Purcell locations collecting casings.
Distance makes the case, it does not weaken it
The usual objection to retreading at a distance is the haul. In Montana the answer runs the other way.
Out here, the slowest thing to arrive is a replacement tire, particularly in a size nobody keeps on a shelf. A casing you own, in a program, is a tire that comes back to you. A casing you scrapped is an order and a wait.
That is the practical reason a Montana fleet should care more about casing survival than a fleet with three tire suppliers within twenty minutes, rather than less.
What finishes a casing here
Three things, in the order they cost Montana fleets money:
- Running a tire flat, usually because a driver pushed on to the next town. It finishes most casings in a short distance.
- Winter under-inflation, which nobody intends. Cold air lowers pressure, the tire runs hot, and the heat works through the casing where no outside inspection will find it.
- Damage left unrepaired, which spreads.
All three are decisions rather than accidents, which is what makes the casing pass rate a number a fleet can actually move.
What goes into the program
Casings from the categories the store handles: commercial, agricultural, OTR, industrial, trailer and light truck among them. Tracks are not retreaded at any Purcell plant, so a worn set is replaced.
For equipment especially, send batches with notice rather than a trickle. A planned batch gets scheduled against the plant's workload; casings that arrive unannounced get fitted in. If you are working to a date, say so when they are collected.
About this store
The Belgrade store is open Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, managed by John Jones, and carries all nine Purcell tire categories. Billings, MT also collects casings.
See the national retreading page for how the program works and for all 54 collecting locations.
