Lifted or leveled? The rest of the truck noticed
Lift kits and leveling kits are popular on pickups and SUVs, and they change more than the look. Raising a vehicle changes the angles its suspension and steering parts were designed to work at, and those parts respond over time.
The effects are worth knowing about whether you installed the kit yourself or bought the truck with one already fitted.
Ball joints and tie rod ends. Steeper working angles and the larger, heavier tires that often come with a lift can put extra load on these parts. Looseness in the steering, clunks over bumps, or wandering on the highway are signs to have them checked.
Shocks. A lift changes how far the suspension travels. Shocks that are too short or not matched to the new height can top out or wear quickly.
Driveline angles. On some vehicles a lift changes the angle of the driveshaft, which can cause a vibration that appears at a certain speed or under acceleration.
Alignment. Any change to ride height changes the alignment. A vehicle that has been raised and not aligned is wearing its tires at the wrong angle from day one.
None of this means a lifted truck is a problem. It means it deserves a closer look at each inspection than a stock vehicle, and that the details of the kit are worth sharing with whoever works on it.
What to tell the technician
The type of kit and how much lift, when it was installed, and the tire size now fitted. If you bought the vehicle already modified, say so, along with anything you know about the work.
What else it touches
Suspension and alignment go together, and car and light truck alignment is at this store. Larger tires also affect braking, and brake repair is here too. The national suspension repair page covers the clunks, pulls and wander that point to worn parts.
Other stores nearby
In Salt Lake City, the Commercial & Consumer store and the Truck Tire Center also offer suspension repair.
