Fix the cause, not only the part that failed
Cooling system repairs have a habit of coming back. A hose splits, a new hose goes on, and a few months later the radiator leaks or the water pump starts to weep. It looks like bad luck. More often it is the same system, of the same age, failing one part at a time.
When one component fails, it is worth asking two questions before agreeing the repair.
Why did it fail? A hose that split because it was old and hard is an age problem. A hose that split because the system was running at high pressure points somewhere else: a radiator cap that no longer holds pressure properly, a blockage, or an engine running hotter than it should. Replacing the hose without finding that leaves the cause in place.
What shape are its neighbors in? The other hoses, the clamps, the thermostat and the radiator were all installed at the same time and have seen the same heat. If one has reached the end of its life, the others are close behind. That does not mean replacing everything at once. It means knowing what was seen, so the next failure is a planned job rather than a roadside one.
After an overheat
If the engine overheated before the repair, say so, and say how far the gauge went and for how long. An overheat can affect more than the cooling system, and the technician needs to know whether to look further. Engine repair is at the same address.
Signs worth booking for
- Coolant that needs topping up more than occasionally.
- A sweet smell, steam, or drips under the front of the vehicle.
- A temperature gauge reading higher than it used to.
- A heater that blows cool on a cold day.
The national cooling system page covers what to do if the gauge goes into the red. Regular checks fit naturally into scheduled maintenance.
