Wheel fasteners loosen where nobody is looking
A wheel is held on by its studs and nuts, clamped with a specific force. When that clamping force drops, the wheel can move very slightly against the hub with every revolution. That movement is small enough to miss and damaging enough to matter.
Over time it wears the stud holes in the wheel, elongating them. Rust trails running out from around the nuts are a common outward sign. A wheel with worn stud holes no longer seats properly, and it is more likely to work loose again even when the nuts are torqued correctly.
Clamping force is lost for ordinary reasons. Paint or dirt between the mating surfaces that compresses in service. Nuts that were not torqued correctly after a tire change. Components that have settled after a new fitting.
The practice that prevents it
- Torque to specification with a calibrated tool after any wheel goes on, rather than by feel.
- Re-check torque after the first stretch of running following a wheel change, as many fleets do as standard.
- Keep mating surfaces clean when wheels are fitted.
- Look for rust trails around the nuts during walkarounds. They are worth reporting.
What refurbishing restores
Cleaning back to sound metal, inspecting the wheel and refinishing it so it is protected. The inspection comes first, and wear around the stud holes is one of the things it looks for, because a wheel that can no longer seat properly is not a candidate. A crack ends the wheel and it is replaced.
A vibration that survives tire and wheel balancing is often the wheel, and both services are here. Wheels refurbished at the same time as a heavy-duty truck alignment save a second visit. The national wheel refurbishing page covers the process.
