24-Hour Roadside Assistance in Craig, CO

Purcell Tire & Service runs commercial roadside assistance from 378 E 1st St in Craig, around the clock, for trucks, trailers and heavy equipment across northwest Colorado. Call (970) 824-0217.

Distance is the variable, and you can shorten it

Craig is the only Purcell location in northwest Colorado. The next one is over the mountains, which makes response time a function of geography rather than of effort.

What you cannot change is how far away a unit is when it stops. What you can change is everything else, and most of it has to be done before the call rather than during it.

A store that already knows your sizes can send the right tire the first time. A store that has to establish what a unit takes while somebody reads a sidewall over a weak signal is spending the call on a question that had an answer weeks ago.

Give the location in terms somebody can drive to

In open country, a road name and a town are not enough.

Mile marker and direction of travel if the unit is on a highway. If it is on a lease road, a site access or a ranch track, say which turnoff, how far in, and what the surface is like, because that decides which vehicle can reach it. A gate that is locked, a cattle guard, or a grade a loaded service truck cannot climb are all worth mentioning before somebody drives out rather than after.

What the store covers

Commercial units and equipment. Craig carries all nine Purcell tire categories, including agricultural, OTR, industrial and tracks, which is unusual for a commercial store and is the direct result of being a long way from an alternative.

General vehicle repair is not offered. Brakes, oil changes, air conditioning and engine work are at Loveland and Denver.

The casing is worth more out here

A tire run flat is usually a casing finished within a short distance, and the replacement tire is the slowest thing to arrive in this part of the state.

Stopping a unit when a tire fails rather than pushing on to somewhere convenient is the calculation that pays here more than anywhere. See retreading.

Questions

Roadside questions, Craig

What should I say when I call?

Where the unit is in terms somebody can drive to, including the access road and its condition. What the unit is and whether it is loaded. The tire size and position. A number that stays reachable.

Can you reach a unit on a lease or ranch road?

Say which road, how far in and what the surface is like. Gates, cattle guards and grades all change which vehicle goes out.

How can we make the response faster?

Put your sizes on file in advance through a fleet account. Establishing what a unit takes during a breakdown is the slowest part of most calls.

Should the driver keep going to town?

Not on a flat. A tire run with no air usually ends the casing, and out here the replacement takes longest to arrive.
