Send them in batches, because the trip is long
Purcell runs seven retread plants and the one serving Colorado is the Denver plant, over the mountains from here. The store collects casings and arranges transport in both directions.
That distance is the reason to think in batches rather than in single casings. A planned batch is a trip worth making, scheduled against what the plant has in hand. Casings sent one at a time as they happen to come off get placed when there is room, and the time involved is harder to predict.
For an operation of any size, the practical arrangement is a standing one: casings accumulate, go together, and come back together. Set it up as part of a fleet account rather than deciding each time.
Plan it around your own calendar
Say what you are working to when a batch is collected rather than afterwards.
An operation with a seasonal pattern, and most of them here have one, should be sending casings during the quiet stretch so the retreads are back before they are needed. A batch sent when the work is already underway is a batch nobody can wait for.
What a casing has to survive to get here
Three things end one, and they all happen before the tire reaches the store: a tire run flat, under-inflation building heat inside the casing where nothing visible reports it, and damage left unrepaired.
The first is the one most under a driver's control. A unit stopped the moment a tire fails usually keeps its casing; a unit driven on to somewhere convenient usually does not. In a place where the replacement tire is the slowest thing to arrive, that is not an abstract loss.
What the plant takes
Commercial truck, agricultural, OTR, industrial, light truck, passenger, trailer, and UTV and ATV casings. Tracks are not retreaded at any Purcell plant.
Craig carries all nine Purcell tire categories, so the casings going out and the tires coming in are one conversation.
About this store
The Craig store is the only Purcell location in northwest Colorado, open Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Colorado Springs, Denver and Loveland collect for the same plant.
See the national retreading page for how the program works and for all 54 collecting locations.
