Most engine repairs were maintenance items first
Engines rarely fail at random. Walk back from a large repair and there is usually a smaller item that was deferred, and then a consequence that was not obvious at the time.
Coolant that was never changed takes out a water pump, and overheating does the rest. Oil left too long between changes stops protecting the parts it was there for. A belt or a tensioner left past its life takes something with it when it goes. A small leak ignored becomes a low fluid level nobody checked.
None of that is a criticism of anybody. It is the reason an engine repair conversation often starts with what the vehicle's history looks like rather than with the symptom, and it is why scheduled maintenance is a cheaper line item than this one.
Diagnosis before parts
A warning light is a report, not a diagnosis. The same light covers faults that differ enormously in cost, and replacing the part a code points at is guessing with parts.
What shortens a diagnosis is a good description. When does it happen, how often, cold or warm, at idle or under load, and what changed before it started. That is worth more than the code, which only says which circuit noticed something.
When to stop driving
Some symptoms justify a tow rather than a drive in.
Oil pressure warning, temperature in the red, a new knocking or tapping that changes with engine speed, or a loss of power accompanied by a warning light. Continuing to drive through any of those is how a repair becomes an engine.
What this store covers
Diagnosis and repair on cars and light trucks. Boise runs sixteen services, the longest list in Idaho, so a fault that turns out to be cooling system or something else stays in one building.
Heavy truck engine work is not offered. The commercial side here is tires, alignment, OTR services, roadside assistance and fleet accounts.
About this store
The Boise store is managed by Tyrel Perkins. Twin Falls and the Idaho Falls consumer store also offer engine repair.
See the national engine repair page for all 33 locations.
