A radiator cools nothing if air cannot get through it
The most common overheating cause in farming country is not a failed part. It is a radiator whose face has packed up with chaff, dust, seed and insects.
A radiator works by passing air across it. Block that air and the coolant inside has nowhere to put its heat, and the system behaves exactly as though something has failed: the temperature climbs under load, settles when the vehicle gets moving, and climbs again next time.
People replace thermostats and water pumps chasing this. The fix is often cleaning the face of the radiator and, on a vehicle with air conditioning, the condenser in front of it, which collects material first and shields the radiator from airflow once it does.
If your vehicle works around fields, this belongs on the list before anything is replaced.
Idling is harder than driving
A vehicle sitting at idle for long periods, which describes plenty of work trucks, gets no airflow except what the fan produces, and produces heat the whole time.
That is the condition where a marginal system shows itself: a fan clutch not engaging properly, a partially blocked radiator, or coolant that has lost its ability to carry heat. A vehicle that is fine on the highway and climbs at idle is telling you something specific.
Coolant has two jobs and a service life
It stops the system freezing, which can be tested and returns a number, and it stops the system corroding, which cannot be seen at all.
The corrosion additives deplete with time whether the vehicle is driven or parked. Depleted coolant looks identical to fresh coolant while the radiator, heater core and water pump corrode internally, which turns a deferred fluid change into a radiator.
What a service covers
Radiator, pressure cap, thermostat, hoses, water pump, fan and coolant. Hoses are judged by condition rather than appearance, since they degrade from the inside.
