Dust is the enemy of airflow

In farming country the air carries material for a good part of the year, and vehicle air conditioning is an airflow system before it is anything else.

Two places collect that material. The cabin air filter, which sits between the outside air and the vents, blocks faster on a vehicle working around fields and gravel than on one that commutes. A blocked cabin filter produces air that is cold but thin, which people report as weak air conditioning when the cooling is working perfectly.

The second is the condenser at the front of the vehicle, which sheds the heat the system removes. Packed with dust, chaff and insects, it cannot do that, and the symptom is cooling that is acceptable at speed and poor when stationary.

Neither is a refrigerant problem, and neither is expensive. Both are worth ruling out before anybody talks about a recharge.

When it is refrigerant

Air conditioning is sealed, and when the charge is genuinely low it left through a leak. Recharging without finding the leak buys a season.

A proper service locates the loss, repairs it and restores the correct charge. Overcharging cools worse than a correct charge rather than better.

The winter job

A system that has failed clears a windshield more slowly, which matters in a cold season. The national A/C service page explains why the two are connected.

Running it a few minutes a month keeps the seals lubricated.

Work vehicles first

A pickup or a van spending its days on farm roads collects far more at the front of the vehicle than a car that stays on pavement. Ask for the condenser and both filters to be checked while the vehicle is in for something else. See oil changes and cooling system service, since the radiator sits directly behind the condenser.

Questions

A/C questions, Twin Falls

The air is cold but weak. Is the system failing?

Often that is airflow rather than cooling, and a cabin air filter blocked with dust is the usual cause. Worth checking first.

It cools at speed but not when parked. Why?

That pattern points at the condenser at the front of the vehicle, packed with dust or debris so it cannot shed heat without airflow.

Can you just recharge it?

Not before the filters and the condenser have been ruled out, since neither of those is a refrigerant problem. See the national A/C service page.

How often should filters be changed on a farm vehicle?

More often than the manual suggests. Dust fills both the cabin and engine air filters faster than average use assumes.
